CBRN Awareness

Overview

This course provides a basic awareness and foundation in CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological & Nuclear) such that individuals will be able to recognise a CBRN event and respond accordingly. CBRNs threat will be explored with examples from each of the across the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear spectrum. The course will cover the media, methods of deployment and likely effects of a CBRN agent.

Objectives

This Awareness course will include

  • Overview of the history and development of CBRN
  • National Strategy for Counter Terrorism and development of resilience to CBRN
  • Understanding of the threats, risks and responses to CBRN agent release:
    • Chemical: Identification of Chemical Agents; TICS (Toxic Industrial Chemicals); Availability; Identification Equipment
    • Biological: Types of Agents; Availability; Delivery Systems; Effects;
    • Radiological: Types and Sources of Radiation; Their Effects; and Mitigation Principles; RDDs (Radiological Dispersal Devices);
    • Nuclear: The Fuel Cycle; Fissile Material; INDs (Improvised Nuclear Devices)

Who Should Attend?

Emergency First Responders; Local Authority Emergency Planners; Health Authority Officials, Building and Security Managers; Industrial organisations with major assets, infrastructure or potential dual use materials.

Course / Module entry requirements

Some scientific and technical understanding would be advantageous but is not essential.  Priority will be given to those directly or indirectly engaged in activities to support resilience to CBRN events.
